Abstract

Fakes, forgery, counterfeits, hoaxes, bullshit, frauds, knock offs-such terms speak, ostensibly, to the inverse of truth or the obverse of authenticity and sincerity. But what does the modern human obsession with fabrications and frauds tell us about ourselves? And what can anthropology tell us about this obsession? This timely book is the product of the first Annual Debate of Anthropological Keywords, a collaborative project between HAU, the American Ethnological Society, and L'Homme, held each year at the American Anthropological Association Meetings. The aim of the debate is reflect critically on keywords and terms that play a pivotal and timely role in discussions of different cultures and societies, and of the relations between them. This book, with multiple authors, explodes open our common sense notions of "novelty," "originality," and "truth," questioning how cultures where deception and mistrust flourish seem to produce effective, albeit opaque, forms of sociality.

Abstract

Revolution Beyond the Event brings togetherleading international anthropologists alongside emerging scholarsto examine revolutionary legacies from the MENA region, LatinAmerica and the Caribbean. It explores the idea that revolutionshave varied afterlives that complicate the assumptions about theirduration, pace and progression, and argues that a renewed focus onthe temporality of radical politics is essential to ourunderstanding of revolution. Approaching revolution through itsrelationship to time, the book is a critical intervention intoattempts to define revolutions as bounded events that act assequential transitions from one political system to another. Itpursues an ethnographically driven rethinking of the temporalhorizons that are at stake in revolutionary processes, arguing thatlinear views of revolution are inextricably tied to notions ofprogress and modernity. Through a careful selection of casestudies, the book provides a critical perspective on the livedrealities of revolutionary afterlives, challenging the liberalhumanist assumptions implicit in the 'modern' idea of revolution, and reappraising the political agency of people caught up inrevolutionary situations across a variety of ethnographic contexts.

Abstract

"What can anthropological thinking contribute to the study of revolutions? The first book-length anthropological approach to revolutions, Anthropologies of Revolution proposes that revolutions should be seen as concerted attempts to radically reconstitute the worlds people inhabit. Viewing revolutions as all-embracing, world-creating projects, the authors ask readers to move beyond the idea of revolutions as acts of violent political rupture, and instead regard them as processes of societal transformation that penetrate deeply into the fabric of people’s lives, unfolding and refolding the coordinates of human existence.“With insightful references to cases around the world, this book advances a brilliant holistic theory that offers credibility and significance to the ways revolutions unfold in culturally specific practices without diminishing their political impact and universal aspirations.” Behrooz Ghamari-Tabrizi, author of Foucault in Iran: Islamic Revolution after the Enlightenment“This fascinating volume opens up new horizons in the study of revolutionary practice. It is difficult to imagine a more important or original work.” David Nugent, author of The Encrypted State: Delusion and Displacement in the Peruvian Andes“This book is a truly original (in all senses of the term) contribution to understanding the global and human condition of far-reaching political, social, and cosmological change.” Bjørn Enge Bertelsen, author of Violent Becomings: State Formation, Sociality, and Power in Mozambique"

Abstract

Abstract

Title in English: Andrej Melicherčík - personality in time, time in personality. The publication is dedicated to one of the founding personalities of modern professional ethnography and folklore studies - prof. PhDr. A. Melicherčík, CSc. (1917-1966). The author has collected and interpreted numerous factual data about Melicherčík´s university studies at the Faculty of Arts of the Slovak University, but especially about his work at Matica slovenská, at the Slovak Academy of Sciences and Arts and at the Faculty of Arts of Comenius University. She characterizes his numerous activities in the field of organization of scientific life and pedagogical work. The author pays special attention to the methodological approaches that A. Melicherčík applied in his scientific work - functional structuralism and historical materialism. In both approaches, he was the initiator of their application in ethnography and folklore studies in Slovakia. The author analyses his work chronologically - studies, monographs and synthetic publications in terms of concepts, research topics and the organizational grasp of their research and publication. She points out the possible influences of scientific personalities (P. G. Bogatyriov, B. Schier et al.), as well as the non-scientific circumstances that influenced Melicherčík's understanding of the subject, methods and instrumentalization of ethnography and folklore studies.

Abstract

This volume is dedicated to the Anthropological and Ethnological section of the Natural History Museum. First the historical journey of the collections is traced from the antique nucleus of the Medici to the foundation of the National Museum of Anthropology and Ethnology, when Florence was the capitol of Italy, and the discipline of anthropology was born. The second part illustrates the multivariate collections from all over the globe. They are a precious record of the past and present biological and cultural diversity of our species opening wide horizons that rigorously connect science to the many faces of human culture, including art. The third section is dedicated to current research and opens new prospectives on the significance of ethnological and anthropological collections due to new technology and in light of a new appreciation of the museum as a living "zone of contact".

Abstract

By invoking Flora Nwapa, this monograph draws attention to Nigerian women writers in world literature, with an emphasis on femininity and spirituality. Flora Nwapa's Efuru (1966) was the first internationally published novel in English by a female African writer. With the establishment of Tana Press in 1977, Flora Nwapa also became the first female publisher in Africa. Although Flora Nwapa has been recognized as the 'mother of modern African literature', she is not sufficiently acknowledged in world literary canons or world literature studies, which is something this monograph aspires to redress, with the help of earlier studies, especially Nigerian scholarship. Drawing on the Efuru@50 celebration in Nigeria in 2016, this book explores the revival of Flora Nwapa's fame as the pioneer of African women's literature. Using an ethnographic rather than biographical approach, it captures Flora Nwapa's literary practice in the context of the Nigerian literary scene and its interlinkages with world literature. The ethnographic portrayal of Flora Nwapa is complemented with an exposé of a select number of contemporary Nigerian women writers, based on interviews during fieldwork in Nigeria. The book uses concepts like creolized aesthetics and womanist worldmaking to advance scholarly understandings of world literature, which is conceived here as a pluriverse of aesthetic worlds. Exploring experimental ethnographic writing, the book combines the genres of creative non-fiction, descriptive ethnography and scholarly analysis, in an effort to make the text more accessible to academic as well as non-academic readers. Through travel notes the experience of fieldwork is shared in a candid manner. Detailed ethnography from the Efuru@50 literary festival is presented to show the expansion of Flora Nwapa's fame. In-depth analyses of Flora Nwapa's literary works and the cultural context of her literary practice cover a wide range of themes, from feminine storytelling and children's literature, to publishing and digitalization. The theoretical discussion draws on anthropological, literary and African womanist theory to contextualize and explore the central themes of femininity and spirituality in world literature. Inspired by the social change perspective of African womanism and critical decolonial theory, the book makes a contribution to current efforts to explore a more socially just and environmentally sustainable world of many worlds. Paying close attention to gender complementarity and sacred engagements in Flora Nwapa's literary worldmaking, it shows how world literature can help us create other possible worlds of human, spiritual and environmental coexistence.
